Inertial navigation sensor for Navy passes review

The littoral combat ship Independence underway during builder’s trials. Builder’s trials are the first opportunity for the shipbuilder and the U.S. Navy to operate the ship underway, and provide an opportunity to test and correct issues before acceptance trials.

Northrop Grumman has successfully completed the preliminary design review for a new inertial navigation sensor.

The Inertial Sensor Module is a critical component of the Navy’s Inertial Navigation System Replacement (INS-R), which will replace the WSN-7 system with the WSN-12, according to a Northrop Grumman news release.

“This is a critical system for both surface and subsurface platforms,” said Todd Leavitt, vice president of Northrop Grumman’s maritime systems division. “It took a lot of focused energy and close coordination with the Navy to achieve this milestone in only four months.”

Engineering development models of the sensor are underway, with deliveries of the system scheduled for mid-2017.
